I want to start developing mobile applications for Windows Phone 7. However, I don't want to use a pirated version of Visual Studio to do that, because I might sell this application and I don't see it ethical to earn money out of a stolen software. At the same time, because I'm an individual .. I cannot afford buying an original copy of the required softwares for developing under this platform.

Is there an ethical/legal solution ? Is it legal to use the RC versions of the software to do that ? or the Education free versions? and use them for commercial purposes.

If I were you, the first thing I'll do is to check the (TOS) Terms Of Service/Use for Visual Studio, I'm sure there is a lot of useful information there. But I really don't think that there's a company that permits the use of its products for a commercial purpose for free.

IMHO, since you are going to develop commercial product(s), I think you may want to borrow the amount of money you need to start developing, and then, after selling your product(s), pay back. I think this is just another form of a startup, which requires some capital to get you started without any legal/ethical problems.

Good luck, Almutasem

Did you have a look on BizSpark? It's a Microsoft program for small and startup ISVs that allows you to enjoy 3 years of using most of Microsoft's products, then pay $100 at the end of that time. Check it at http://www.microsoft.com/bizspark
