In my opinion, competition is very healthy for startups for the following reasons:

  • Helps you create and expand the market.
  • Pushes you to innovate beyond limits
  • You can learn from their mistakes

Having competitors to my startup made my entrepreneurial experience so much fun.

Great points Elie. I would argue that it also:

  1. Validates the existence of a market. No competition would raise eyebrows with investors. Either you do not know how to do research or there is no market.
  2. It helps rally the troops around a goal. It gives everyone in your startup focus.
  3. Puts you on the radar from a PR, biz dev, acquisition perspective. If your competition does something, you may be able to ride their wave.
