I have done some C++ coding in the past but haven't done PHP or anything else on the web. After looking for hires I have decided it's better to start my next project bymyself using Ruby, what's the best way to quickly get up to speed ?

I started off with these screencasts -- they're quick and very helpful.

My general philosophy for learning a new languages is do a quick tutorial that takes hours, such as those suggested by others and then do a small personal project. Walking the walk will help you retain things and actually understand what you are reading.
