Does it make sense to give access to your product with an API ?

Do you benefit when people use your service on your site or when people use your service anywhere on the web? If people benefit and you make money when people use your service, on your site only, an API might not be a good idea. But if it's something where you get more power from having your site used and deployed all over the web (like Facebook Connect), then by all means go with an API.

If your product a service provider like Amazon? if you are going to provide services for other developers and apps you should build an API (e.g. RESTful webservice).

Designing and building an API isn't an easy task, your API should be stable and you shouldn't change them always otherwise the developers will have to change their apps too.

So the 1 million dollar question is what kind of services you want to provide that require API?

If you are doing something social, that people can use freely and dynamically, yes - open your API for public. This will help spreading your word. Try to use simple APIs or code generators for non-experienced users.
