One very important part of running a startup is using the right tools and products to manage, design, and maintain products ... What tools can you not live without ? For example Basecamp / dropbox / github etc ... and which ones you are using but only because you didn't find a better alternative ..

For our team to communicate:

  • IRC for team communication (freenode is pretty good for this). IRC is also great if you need support with any software you're using, any well-known open source community has an IRC where you can get a quick response.
  • trac for issue tracking.
  • Google Apps for email / simple static pages
  • Dropbox to share files - we have a few shared folders for company-related files.

To communicate with our customers:

  • We wrote a custom feedback application on our site - this ended up being well worth the time it took us to build - communicating with users via email is incredible. 3rd party user feedback sites are okay, but the advantage is undeniable - people want to interact with you on your site.
  • Twitter / Facebook / Other Social Media. Tweetdeck.

There are plenty of free tools online that are helps enhancing productivity.

As a web developer, i use the following:

  • Pivotal Tracker for PM and User Stories tracking (allows adding members and viewers on a project level. Adding different accounts "emails" and is very easy to use)
  • Version Control: I use git, it awesome (allows working offline, branch/merging like a breeze)
  • Code hosting: Github (Social Networking etc...)
  • For calendar, email and documents sharing, i use Google Calendar, GDocs and Gmail (grouped several accounts into one)
