Do you think that running Hobby-projects or having active presence on websites like CodeProject and freshmeat are worthwhile for the developers on the business level ? In other words:

Very good question; I personally contributed one piece of code to CodeProject back in 2005 but couldn't keep it up. It's really hard to maintain such activities if you're an entrepreneur in a startup, unless your startup offers development services as part of its mandate. In that case, this would be a great way to get (almost) free marketing. For an entrepreneur I would strongly advise against focusing on anything other than your product and business. Build it, create value, succeed, after that you'll have all the time in the world to satisfy that geek bug in you. As a business owner, I am always impressed when a developer is actively involved and contributing to the community. |

I think contributing to the Freshmeat, Codeproject or any open source repository is a major plus in my opinion. The most important reason is that you're proving that your coding is standard compliant & you love what you're doing. If you're applying to a company with a good reputation, your contributions will definitely give you a better chance. |
