Do you think that running Hobby-projects or having active presence on websites like CodeProject and freshmeat are worthwhile for the developers on the business level ?

In other words:

  • As a developer applying for a job , is it recommended to add such activities to his/her CV ?
  • Would enterprise development companies consider those skill of importance? or discard them as not "professional development experience" ?
  • Would it effect the developer's chances of landing bigger/better jobs?
  • --some companies ask for list of expertise or previous experiences developing in that specific field (developing an E-solution, a website..etc..) to help choose a suitable freelancer--

  • Would it effect you in choosing your employees, if you owned your own startup/company?

  • EDIT:

  • Do you think if some of these hobby-projects find partial success (Ex:if an internet-browser project hits off well and gets a good percentage of users ) should it's developers turn it into a startup ? or should they wait awhile until it stands on solid ground before taking such a decision?

    بالنسبة إلي تهمني المشاريع الجانبية. حين أبحث عن مبرمج لا يعنيني كثيرا أين كان يعمل سابقا، بل ماذا كان يعمل. هل لديه أفكار خاصة به وهل يشارك في مشاريع البرمجيات الحرة مفتوحة المصدر.

    بالنسبة للشركات العربية "الكبيرة" فهي تقليدية في تفكيرها. ويهمها حقا "الأعمال الحقيقية"، والتي حسب فهمها لا تتضمن الاشتغال على مشاريع خاصة. لكن الشركات العربية الناشئة تفكر بطريقة مختلفة. لذلك لو استطعت تنفيذ مشاريع جانبية خاصة بك فستضيف لنفسك قيمة أكبر لدى تلك الشركات.

    Very good question;

    I personally contributed one piece of code to CodeProject back in 2005 but couldn't keep it up.

    It's really hard to maintain such activities if you're an entrepreneur in a startup, unless your startup offers development services as part of its mandate. In that case, this would be a great way to get (almost) free marketing.

    For an entrepreneur I would strongly advise against focusing on anything other than your product and business. Build it, create value, succeed, after that you'll have all the time in the world to satisfy that geek bug in you.

    As a business owner, I am always impressed when a developer is actively involved and contributing to the community.

    I think contributing to the Freshmeat, Codeproject or any open source repository is a major plus in my opinion. The most important reason is that you're proving that your coding is standard compliant & you love what you're doing.

    If you're applying to a company with a good reputation, your contributions will definitely give you a better chance.
