I know that a lot of users in MENA use IE and some have IE6 but in this day and age do we still need to worry about supporting IE6 ? Any experience you can share ?

According to wikipedia IE6 still holds 20% of the "worldwide" market. (IE in general still holds 60% of all browsers useage)

But since dominating websites such Youtube are Ditching support for it, and are helping redirect users to other browsers, we can hope for a revolutionary change , in the next few quarters :)

Side-note: you can do some Browser-Visitors statistics on your website and from them you can figure out the level of support you would want to implement on your website

EDIT:

This article Encourages Not to stop supporting in a very nice simple way, i recommend reading it.

This article on the other hand encourages you to do that, and it shows both the Merits And Demerits of stopping support to it :)

It depends on your startup. If your users are geeks and are aware enough, you should not worry about IE6. But, if you're targeting old ladies and non techy people, you better support IE6.

I personally don't support IE6 a lot on Woopra.com since our users are all webmasters and must be aware that IE6 sucks big time.

If you're not supporting IE6, make sure to display a note with a download link to your favorite browser for IE6 visitors.

I used to believe that if you want to consider yourself a successful web developer, you have to show your web project the best possible way. Experienced web developers usually know the most common errors would come up in IE6, solving such problems would take much less time for those experienced.

My answer is: Yes, as long as the browser is being used, you have to worry about supporting it.

When people come to our site in IE6, we use this generous message to recommend that people update their browser:

http://www.ie6nomore.com/

It works really well because many users who use IE6 don't know why it's bad; this message politely asks that they update their browser.

Honestly, it's an engineering waste to focus on supporting IE6. For 90% of web products, I wouldn't worry about completely supporting it.

There are exceptions to this, however. You have to know your market - common sense here is important. If you're working with the government, for example, I'd make sure that I support IE6. If your competitor supports IE6, you should probably as well.
