Can you provide more details ? What kind of product are you building ? Where are you based? What stage are you and where are you aiming to go with the money ?

Today, with open source and agile development you can build startups/products for very cheap - You have all the open source packages you need. Your main cost is going to be salaries, insurance, rent, servers ... Marketing budget should also be very low ...

Whatever number you come up with, multiply by 1.5 or 2 to keep some leeway, most entrepreneurs underestimate how much they need

Great answer Habib, also consider putting small targets to achieve (i.e. Agile) so it won't cost you a lot, and you won't go far in dreams :)

Registration fees vary from place to place. Office space also matters. What kind of business are looking to start?

Well, that depends on a lot of factors... giving you an example, when we started our venture the partners were enough to start working alone without having anyone else working with us and that minimized our cost big time.

Before knowing the number you should be able to know your needs and they definitely differ from a startup to another. And here I second Habib's answer, you need to figure out your costs based on your needs to have your startup running.

But I truly believe that nowadays startups don't need a lot of money to start, but they will need it at a later stage to expand and sustain themselves.
