How much time and resources is your startup investing in social media today, especially considering the low internet penetration rates in the region? Do you have a full time person dedicated to twitter/facebook/other communities? is one of the founders doing this on the side? are you seeing any tangible results? |

It depends on how much of a consumer product it is. I don't think social media is critical for business-to-business applications like IBM working with the government, but it's invaluable for interacting with your end users. A friend and I run a small music website with an audience of mostly college students, and find using social media to be a great took. I was skeptical of it at first, but I'm now very impressed by the power it has given us. In terms of results, it does help a lot. Whenever we post something on our twitter or facebook page, there is a noticeable spike on traffic to the site. You sort of have to go out there and talk to your users at first and make it really compelling to follow you on social media channels. There are some good tools out there for managing your social media presence - I prefer Tweetdeck because it lets you keep up with multiple accounts on Facebook and Twitter - that way you can manage everything from one place and see the whole picture at once. |
