A lot of people in the Middle East call themselves entrepreneur these days because it sounds cool ... When can I say to people I am an entrepreneur and really be one. I am doing stuff on the side but haven't left my job or took the risk yet to be on my own. What defines an entrepreneur, any shared traits ?

The best definition I came across is: "An entrepreneur is someone who thinks the status quo sucks and decided to do something about it"

This is probably not the scientifically proven answer you are looking for, but here it goes. From what I have read and from what I have observed in the entrepreneurs that I know, a few traits are common: 1- self-assurance, almost beyond limits and definitely not shakable by a startup failure or two 2- pragmatic doers, as opposed to 'theory people' 3- flexible 4- well-rounded and versatile who can wear many hats 5- visionary/can connect the dots between different trends and technologies (think Steve Jobs)

That being said, what people call themselves or how they perceive themselves has little influence on what they are capable of doing;-)

the definition I found in the dictionary is: someone who organizes a business venture and assumes the risk for it [http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&q=define:entrepreneur] , but I wouldn't worry too much about the definition. you can be an entrepreneur outside of a business venture setting, in a nonprofit setting, for example.

I think the first step to being entrepreneurial is to consistently think of how to improve things. Instead of looking at a problem and thinking "this is a problem", think of it as "there is so much room for improvement, could we start a business by solving this problem?"
