Any tips on how I can get some press/blogs coverage ? If you look at Twitter's success it's mainly due to the amazing press coverage they got at the beginning. How can others get the same press love :)

  • Ride the success wave of a hot subject - For example, at Yamli we were used in Lebanon during the parliamentary elections - A company used our API to develop an SMS service to help find their electoral jurisdiction, we used that fact to get covered by the press since Elections was a hot topic.
  • Focus on getting ONE major coverage, the rest will follow
  • Be accessible: Put an easy way for press/bloggers to reach you. Be present on Twitter and Facebook and always answer requests. Journalists act on very tight deadlines, be sure you are very responsive in attending their requests.
  • Don’t be afraid to cold call the press : You might be surprised how sometimes you can get press coverage this way.
  • Networking events: Mingle with bloggers at local casual events.
  • Awards or un-biased recognition are usually good to get a first coverage
  • And of course, be creative. The press loves to cover innovation so give it to them :)

The press loves businesses that have stories behind them.

My friend's business just got featured in some newspapers because they're donating their revenues for the month to relief efforts in Haiti. Here's their site: TLAF.

Be good and people, especially the press, will notice you.

Also, good product marketing makes a huge difference: Buzzmarketing is a very good book on the topic.

أول خطوة هي التواصل. كون قاعدة معارف من المدونين والصحفيين، وتواصل معهم عند كل جديد. يمكنك أيضا استقطاب اهتمام الصحفيين والمدونين، بـ :

  • أن تكون الأول: ابتكر شيئا جديدا لم يسبقك إليه أحد. أو قدم فكرة قديمة بصيغة جديدة مختلفة.
  • أن تفوز بجائزة: ابحث عن المسابقات ذات صلة بنشاطك وشارك فيها. لو فزت بإحداها سوف تنتبه إليك وسائل الإعلام.
  • أن تحصل على عميل مهم: إذا كنت تقدم منتجا أو خدمة معينة، حاول اقناع عميل كبير (شركة كبيرة مثلا، أو شخصية ذات وضع اعتباري مهم) باستخدام خدمتك أو منتجك.

I would like to second Habib's answer. He has really done a phenomenal job in getting press and it is RARE to find entrepreneurs so good and willing to put themselves out there like he has.

Having said that, I would like to add a few things to what he said:

  • Send out press releases but don't expect the press to call you back on them. These days, press releases are mainly for search engine results so that they press can find you.
  • Offer editors to write fair and balanced articles (NOT just product promos). Editors NEED expert opinions all the time and are always looking for good ideas and sources.
  • Figure out the reporters you want to cover them and follow their blogs, articles, etc... You will see an opportunity for coverage at some point
  • Present yourself as an expert by publishing your own content (blog, Twitter, etc...) If you have something interesting to say, the press will find you.

You could draft a professional press release to distribute to media outlets. Put together a mailing list of journalists, news organizations, and TV/Web programs in the area of your idea/startup and send them something resembling a newswire/businesswire press release.
