I am wondering if map and GPS or GIS data is available in the Middle East, and how one can access it via a mobile phone. |

Nokia offers free GPS data on most of its handsets and free turn-by-turn navigation on a select few through its Ovi Maps service: http://maps.ovi.com/ Google Maps also offer free mapping/GPS location services on all mobile platforms. Other than that, various GPS service providers currently operate in different Middle East countries - I distinctly remember a billboard in Beirut for a GPS navigation device/service, and I know Jordan has two or three operating. The GCC and KSA are also heavily covered by international GPS manufacturers and mapping providers. |

www.openstreetmap.com is easiest source to work with, imo. Not very up to date but it's open so start contributing! |
